BUFFALO, N.Y. - The D’Youville women’s volleyball team eclipsed another milestone this season, sweeping Roberts Wesleyan, 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 27-25) for the program’s first-ever East Coast Conference victory Wednesday night at the College Center Gymnasium.
The win moves the Saints to 1-2 in ECC play and 2-11 overall while snapping a four-match losing skid.
D’Youville took control early in the first set, using a 4-0 run highlighted by an ace from freshman Samantha Killane. Freshman Emily Fischer sparked a 3-0 spurt to close out the set on her second kill of the night.
Trailing 4-2 early in the second set, the Saints rallied for five straight points highlighted by three more kills for Fischer and a service ace from freshman Nathalya Rocha. The rookie pair finished off the second set victory with kills on D’Youville’s final two points.
D’Youville trailed for much of the third set as the Redhawks (1-13 overall, 0-3 ECC) tried to pull back one set. Down 18-15, the Saints scored six of the next set seven points to grab a two-point advantage at 20-18. Back-to-back kills from sophomore Brianna Damstetter helped D’Youville reclaim the advantage.
With Roberts at set-point on a 25-24 lead, a kill by sophomore Sarah Wittek, a ball-handling error from the Redhawks, and a final kill by freshman Eve Musielak secured conference win number one on the season.
Fischer's nine kills, a season-high for the freshman, paced the Saints while Damstetter added eight kills and Musielak chipped in seven kills of her own … Killane led the Saints with 18 digs, Musielak followed up with nine digs while freshman Emma Wlostowski and Fischer each had seven digs.
The Saints return to conference action on Saturday at Bridgeport. The first serve is set for 12 p.m.
