ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The D’Youville women’s volleyball team split the final day of the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament with a loss to New Haven and a win over the hosts. The Saints fell to the Chargers in straight sets (25-14, 25-13, 25-11) and won in five sets over the Redhawks (18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11).
The win over the Redhawks was the program's first over a Division II program and the first win of the season for the Saints (1-7).
Match 1: vs. New Haven
New Haven hit .376 as a team and got double-digit kills from Emily Barry and Jessica Akiona. Barry added 10 digs. Nathalya Rocha paced the D’Youville attack with eight kills on 20 attacks for a .300 clip. Rocha’s eight kills were one off her career-high.
In set one, New Haven scored the first three points of the match before Rocha got the Saints on the board. The Chargers answered with a 6-0 spurt to take a 9-1 advantage and did not look back. D’Youville would cut it to eight at 20-12 but could not get any closer.
The Chargers started fast once again in set two and built an early 10-2 lead before a Saint timeout. A kill from Rocha and an error got the Saints back within six at 16-9. New Haven closed the set on a 4-1 scoring run.
The third set opened closer than the previous two, with the teams splitting the first six points. A kill from Eve Musielak got D'Youville within one at 6-5; then New Haven would run off five straight to take a 12-5 lead. D’Youville scored back-to-back points off errors before New Haven went on a 9-1 run to take control of the set and sweep the match.
Match 2: vs. Roberts Wesleyan
In the weekend's final match, the Saints picked up their first win over the season over Roberts Wesleyan in five sets. The Saints recorded 13 aces and got double-digit kills from Nathalya Rocha (13), Eve Musielak (12), and Olivia Jarosz (12). All three set new career highs with their efforts versus the Redhawks. Samantha Killane recorded 43 digs and three aces. The 43 digs tied the second-most in a five-set Division II match this season heading into play this weekend.
After dropping set one, the Saints came back to take sets two and three. The Saints scored the first six points of set two. Roberts then tied the set at seven. Neither team would lead by more than four the rest of the way. Trailing 20-19, the Saints reeled off seven of eight points to close the set. In the run, Rocha had two kills, Killane had two aces, and Brianna Damstetter closed the set with a kill.
Set three was back and forth at the start before the Saints took control in the middle stages. With the score 8-8, D’Youville went on a 14-4 run to take a 22-12 lead. A kill from Damstetter sealed the set win for the Saints after Roberts cut the lead to three.
After a tight set four that saw Roberts win to force a decisive fifth set, the Saints built an early 7-4 lead in the fifth. The Saints would hold the lead for the remainder of the set and close the match with a kill from Jenna Urban and a Redhawks error.
An All-Tournament was voted on by the participating coaches. Damstetter earned first-team honors while Emma Wlostowski was named to the second-team. Damstetter averaged 1.4 kills/set over the four matches, while Wlostowski averaged 6.0 assists/set--including 39 in the five-set win over Roberts--for the weekend.
The Saints open up East Coast Conference play next weekend with a trip to Long Island. D’Youville faces Molloy on Saturday and Queens on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to start at noon.
