The D'Youville women's tennis team opened its weekend in Sparkill, N.Y., on a sour note, dropping a Saturday match at St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-0.
The Saints moved to 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in the East Coast Conference standings with the loss, while the victory improved the Spartans to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in ECC play.
The day started with juniors Alisson Meissner and Taylor Nash falling on the top doubles court, 6-0, to Viktoriia Pavlovets and Eliza Mulder. In the No. 2 doubles match, sophomores Julia Clapper and Faith Falkowski dropped a 6-0 contest to Dauphine Donker and Flaminia Valci, while the third doubles matchup saw the Katarina Lopez/Brooke Lopez combo defeat the duo of Taylor-Anne Austin and Katelyn Hoover, 6-0.
In the singles portion of Saturday, Meissner was topped by Donker in two sets (6-1, 6-0) in the top singles match, while Clapper suffered an identical fate against Valci in the second singles showdown (6-1, 6-0). The No. 3 singles matchup featured Katarina Lopez knocking off Falkowski (6-0, 6-0), and Brooke Lopez turned in a similar result against Nash on the No. 4 singles court (6-1, 6-0).
Due to time constraints, the final two singles matches were decided by pro sets, as Alba Guijo beat Austin by an 8-0 score on the fifth court, while sophomore Katrina Whipple fell to Maya O'Brien in an 8-0 contest on the sixth court.
Notables – Saturday was the first all-time meeting between the two programs … Meissner drew the top singles spot for the second time this season … Saturday's match was Hoover's first action of the campaign.
Up Next – The Saints and Spartans face off once again on Sunday, with that conference match slated to begin at 11 a.m.
