Daemen Defeats Tennis in Season Opener, 7-0

Facing crosstown East Coast Conference foe Daemen to begin the spring 2021 season, the D'Youville women's tennis team fell by a 7-0 score Saturday evening at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville, N.Y.

The Saints moved to 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in ECC play, while the Wildcats shifted to a 1-0 record in-conference and overall.

In the top singles match of the night, junior Alisson Meissner was topped by Daemen's Frida Rubio (0-6, 0-6), while sophomore Julia Clapper fell by an identical score (0-6, 0-6) to Christina Stasiuk in the second singles match. Sophomore Faith Falkowski was not able to do much better against Kayla Nguyen (0-6, 0-6), while junior Taylor Nash lost to Courtney Otis by a 1-6, 1-6 score. Singles match No. 5 ended with a 0-6, 1-6 score in favor of the Wildcats' MacKenzie Schayes over sophomore Taylor-Anne Austin. The final singles match of the night saw sophomore Katrina Whipple battle Hannah Pagano before falling to her Wildcat counterpart (4-6, 4-6).

The doubles portion of the season opener went better for the Saints, despite falling in each match. While Clapper and Falkowski were knocked off by the Rubio/Stasiuk pairing by a 0-6 mark, the Meissner/Nash duo improved to a 1-6 loss to Otis and Nguyen. Finally, Austin and Whipple were able to hang with Schayes and Pagano, falling 4-6 in the final match of the night.
