ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Two goals within a minute was the difference between #24 Molloy and the D’Youville women’s soccer team on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions tacked on one later in the going to win, 3-0.
The loss moves D’Youville’s record to 3-4 on the year, and 1-2 in East Coast Conference play. Molloy remains undefeated in league play (3-0) and moves to 7-1 overall.
The Saints and Lions played an even opening 19 minutes. Then Lexi Verni scored twice in less than 60 seconds for the hosts and put the Saints on the back foot going forward.
With the teams tied midway through the second half, the Saints continued to press forward to try and get back into the game. In the 68th minute, Jordan Pachla put a free kick on goal, but the effort was right at Jackie Carty in the Lions net. Later in the 76th minute, Maggie Leeds got on the end of a Pachla free-kick, but Leeds’ header went wide of the near post.
Joanna Graca added the third goal for Molloy in the 88th minute when she was behind the Saints’ backline and converted a 1v1 opportunity with Laurie Poeller in the Saints’ goal.
Poeller made 10 saves, including a pair in 1v1 situations earlier in the second half to keep the game at 2-0. Poeller also made three stops in the final three minutes of the first half to keep the Saints within two at the half.
The 10 saves for Poeller mark the second time this season the Akron, N.Y. native has reached double digits in saves … With the loss, the Saints’ two-game winning streak ended …
Another road trip awaits D’Youville. The Saints visit Bridgeport on Saturday. Kick-off with the Purple Knights is set for noon.
