Women's Soccer Drops ECC Opener to Daemen

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The D’Youville women’s soccer team returned to Dobson Field Saturday afternoon, opening East Coast Conference play with cross-town rival, Daemen, falling 3-1. The setback puts the Saints at 1-3 on the season with an early 0-1 mark in league play.

A cagey first 20 minutes kept the teams scoreless before Tayjana Scalisi broke the deadlock with a goal in the 24th minute on an assist from Emily Mogavero that put the guests up 1-0. Daemen (2-3 overall, 1-0 ECC) didn’t waste any time doubling their advantage when Scalisi picked up her third point of the half with an assist to Baylin Tighe in the 31st minute.

Just before the stroke of halftime, junior Maggie Leeds stepped up for the Saints to cut the Wildcat lead in half. On a free-kick from about 40 yards out, Leads placed her shot into the top of the Daemen net for D’Youville’s first ECC goal in program history.

The conference foes played a tight second half as D’Youville tried to level the match in the final 45 minutes. A goal in the final seconds from Faye Panagopoulos on another assist from Scalisi put the Saints away for good.
