BUFFALO, N.Y. -  The D’Youville women’s soccer team, led by Abby Pearson making her head-coaching debut for the Saints, kicked off their 2021 campaign at Dobson Field Thursday evening, falling 3-2 in double overtime to Nyack College.

Despite a go-ahead goal in the 76th minute from senior Maggie Leeds, Nyack answered with an 86th-minute equalizer to send the game into overtime. In the second sudden-death period, Nyack’s Zion Dewerff slotted home the game-winning goal to spoil the Saints’ hopes of a season-opening victory.

The Warriors took an early 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute when Shanice Rapp found Milena Ricken for a tap-in goal. Just before the end of the first half, D’Youville found their answer when Jillian Bernas put home an effort off a rebound from a Leeds shot to deadlock the game at one heading into the intermission. Bernas’ equalizer was her first goal at the collegiate level.

The back-and-forth affair continued into the second half as both teams traded goals before the end of regulation and through a scoreless first overtime period.

Coach's Thoughts

"I was super proud of the fight and the determination. The effort was something we can build on this entire season. Our team always responded and that's what impressed me most was that we never gave up." - Head coach Abby Pearson

Junior goalkeeper Laurie Poeller stepped up big for the Saints between the pipes with eight saves ... Her counterpart in goal, Lea Zehringer, collected five saves for the Warriors.

Nyack outshot D’Youville 18-12 on the evening with the visitors placing 11 shots on frame while the Saints put eight shots on goal

Four Saints placed shots on target, paced by sophomore Lauren Zwolenkiewicz (three) and Leeds (three), followed up by junior Jordan Pachla (one) and Bernas (one) … Along with her second-half goal, Leeds also picked up D’Youville’s lone assist on the evening on Bernas’ goal.
