BUFFALO, N.Y. - The D'Youville women's soccer team returned to East Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon, coming back from an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw with Staten Island at Dobson Field. The tie moves the Saints to 4-5-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in ECC action.
The Saints fell behind early when Mirsade Pelinkovic scored from a tight angle outside the 18-yard box in the third minute. Despite the early goal, both teams played to a scoreless final 40+ minutes to the half.
D'Youville found its tieing goal in the 60th minute when graduate transfer Kavina Ganeshan scored her second goal of the season. Ganeshan cleaned up freshman Jillian Bernas' saved shot when the goalkeeper's deflection found its way to the Florida Gulf Coast transfer's feet.
Later in the half, Ganeshan nearly found the winner when her shot from inside the 18-yard box deflected off the top of the crossbar and out of play. The two newest conference members would share the ECC points as the score would remain at one apiece through the end of regulation and both overtime periods.
The Saints outshot the Dolphins on the afternoon, 13-8, with a 5-3 shots-on-goal advantage … Junior Laurie Poeller made two saves during her 110 minutes in between the D'Youville posts … Bernas moves into second on the team in points (9) with her assist on Ganeshan's goal … The freshman also has two goals this season for D'Youville.
The Saints continue home ECC play on Friday, October 15 when Lincoln (Pa.) comes to town. Kick-off from Dobson Field is slated for 5 p.m.
