Women's Lacrosse Falls in Season Opener to Rochester

The D'Youville women's lacrosse team opened their 2021 spring season Saturday afternoon, dropping a home contest with the University of Rochester, 16-4, at Dobson Field. 

Saturday's loss saw the Saints fall to 0-1 on the season while the Yellow Jackets improved to 1-0. 

Down by 1-0 earlysenior midfielder Isabella Lucania scored off of a free-position shot to knot the game back up. Lucania's opening goal of the season was her 35th career goal at D'Youville. The Yellow Jackets countered with two more goals before junior midfielder Riley Riedel added D'Youville's second goal of the opening half, cutting their deficit to 4-2.

Riedel's goal was the first of her two on the afternoon as she cashed in on the Saints' opening goal in the second half. Her tally was added to her career mark of 38 goals in a D'Youville uniform. Lucania added one more goal off of a free-position chance to cap the scoring for the Saints' offense in the second half.  

Notables – Mary Panepento and Emily Voss paced the game with three goals apiece for UR, as both players tallied two assists as well ... freshman goalkeeper Hannah Wilson (0-1) was tagged with the loss, saving 6 of the 22 shots she faced ... Goalkeeper Carlie Bendavid (1-0) picked up the win for the Jackets, saving 8 of the 12 shots thrown at her ... The Yellow Jackets outshot the Saints on the afternoon, 25-14, with 22 of their shots landing on frame while 12 D'Youville attempts were put on goal … The Saints won the battle on draw controls, 12-10, as Rochester edged the Saints in ground balls picked up, 25-24 ... The all-time record between the two schools moves to 4-0 in favor of the Yellowjackets.

Up Next – With the cancellation of Wednesday's game with Cazenovia due to COVID-19 protocols inside the Wildcats program, the Saints will travel to Erie, Pa., on SundayMarch 14, for a nonconference match with Mercyhurst scheduled for 4 p.m.
