The D'Youville women's lacrosse team took an early lead Wednesday evening but were unable to slow down a high-scoring Gannon attack in an 18-6 defeat at Dobson Field in Buffalo, N.Y.
Junior Riley Riedel and sophomore Bethany Wolcott put the Saints ahead 2-0 in the first eight minutes of the game with a pair of unassisted goals. Despite the two-goal D'Youville advantage, Gannon battled back, netting the final five goals of the opening half.
Sophomore Danielle Thompson got one goal back for D'Youville to open the second half, trimming Gannon's advantage to two goals at 5-3 just 49 seconds into the period. Thompson's goal was as close as D'Youville would get, with the Golden Knights scoring the next five goals to regain control, going on to outscore the Saints 13-4 in the second half. Wolcott added one more goal to her tally and Thompson picked up a hat trick, netting the final pair of D'Youville goals in the second half.
