The D'Youville women's lacrosse team returned to road East Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon, falling 20-7 to St. Thomas Aquinas College at Spartan Field in Sparkill, N.Y.
The Saints fell to 2-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play while the host Spartans improved to 4-2 in 2021 and an even 2-2 in the ECC standings.
The Spartans took control early, netting the first six goals of the game before sophomore midfielder Bethany Wolcott scored on a free-position shot with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening half. 50 seconds later, junior midfielder Riley Riedel drew one more back for D'Youville on an assist from senior attacker Marissa Markott, cutting the STAC advantage to four goals. In the final nine minutes of the first half, the Spartans retook control of the match by scoring the game's next three goals, inflating their halftime lead to 9-3.
The two teams traded goals to open the final period of play with Danielle Cajou scoring unassisted for STAC and Wolcott adding her second of the day on a solo effort. Wolcott's goal started a three-goal run for the Saints that including one from senior midfielder Isabella Lucania on a free-position shot before Wolcott completed her hat-trick on an assist from junior midfielder Tiffany Cristofanelli. Markott ended a 4-0 scoring run from STAC on another free position goal for the Saints.
Markott's goal was too little too late for D'Youville, as the high-flying Spartan offense rattled off five unanswered goals before Riedel added her second with three minutes remaining on an assist from sophomore attacker Danielle Thompson.
Notables – STAC dominated draw controls, 19-8, in the weekend defeat and edged the Saints in ground balls, 18-17 … The Spartan offense generated 36 total shots and peppered the D'Youville net with 26 on goal while the Saints managed 17 shots with 13 on goal … Both goalkeepers, freshman Hannah Wilson (2-8) for D'Youville and Laura Delorenzo (4-2) for STAC made six saves for their respective teams ... Wolcott extended her point streak to nine games with her three goals on Saturday ...Markott picked up her fourth multi-point performance of the season ... Lucania's tally broke a three-game scoring drought ... Riedel now has five multi-goal games in 2021.
