The D'Youville College women's basketball program tipped off its 2021 campaign and East Coast Conference home schedule with an 85-52 defeat at the hands of No. 17 Daemen College at the College Center Gym.
Making their NCAA Division II provisional debut and playing in their first competitive game in 329 days, the Saints battled hard and kept within shouting distance of the reigning East Coast Conference champions for the first 20 minutes of play. Daemen raced out to a 20-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter, including a 14-4 run to begin the contest. D'Youville kept pace in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 14-13, which cut their deficit to 11 points at halftime. Junior guard Danielle Hore led both teams in scoring in the first half with 11 points on 4-of-14 shooting, including two three-pointers.
Daemen picked up the pace in the second half and wouldn't look back. The Wildcats used a 10-0 scoring run after the break, extending their lead to 43-22 just two minutes into the third quarter. Despite the big run to open the final half, D'Youville put up 20 points in the quarter (their highest-scoring quarter of the night) thanks to four made three-pointers and 61.5% shooting from the field.
Notables - Two Saints landed in double-digit scoring Friday night: sophomore guard Sara Pfeiffer (21 points: 7-19 FG and 5-11 3PT) and Hore (15 points: 6-19 FG, 2-5 3PT) … As a team, D'Youville shot 31.7% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc, and 66.7% from the free-throw line.
Up Next - The Saints will complete the home-and-home weekend series with Daemen on Sunday, Jan. 24 at Lumsden Gymnasium on the campus of Daemen College. Sunday's matinee is slated for a noon tip-off.
