The D'Youville women’s basketball team returned to East Coast Conference action Friday evening, falling in the second half to Roberts Wesleyan, 95-78, at the College Center Gymnasium in Buffalo, N.Y.

After three weeks off, the Saints did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard. D’Youville jumped out to a 7-0 advantage in the first 90 seconds of the game thanks to buckets from sophomore guard/forward Haley Kirisits, sophomore guard Elizabeth Bradley, and a layup from junior guard Danielle Hore. Bradley’s three came off a steal from junior guard/forward Riley RiedelThe Redhawks used three unanswered buckets of their own to cut the deficit to 7-6. The teams traded buckets for the rest of the opening quarter with the Saints shooting 38.9 percent from the field (7-18 FG) and the Redhawks a slightly better 41.2 percent (7-17 FG) clip.

Kirisits’ jumper to begin the second quarter got the Saints back in front and a couple minutes later, Hore dished out assists on two more D’Youville threes, the first finding Bradley to break the deadlock at 20 and the second finding freshman guard Jadyn Jones to put the Saints up by six points at 26-20. Re-entering the game at the 5:20 mark of the first half, sophomore guard Sara Pfeiffer took over the Saints offense, scoring the next eight points, including back-to-back threes. Hore added two more buckets before Pfeiffer cashed in again from beyond the arc, her third of the half. Riedel added one more jumper before the half, on Hore’s sixth assist of the half, to give the Saints a 43-40 advantage heading into the locker room.

A tale of two halves saw the Redhawks race out of the halftime break on a 23-0 run, taking a 20-point lead just before the four-minute mark in the third quarter. Pfeiffer ended the scoring spurt with another three, this time off an assist from Kirisits. The Redhawks put up 37 points in the third quarter on 60.9 percent (14-23 FG) shooting compared to only 12 points from D’Youville, who was held to a 15.0 percent (3-20 FG) clip. The Saints fared better in the final period of play, outscoring Roberts Wesleyan 23-18, but the damage was already done as the Redhawks cruised to their second conference win of the season. Bradley led all scorers in the fourth, scoring six of her 14 points in the final period.
