PREVIEW: Softball Returns to DuBois with Unfinished Business

Game 2: No. 8 D'Youville (26-12) vs. No. 7 Penn St.-DuBois (17-19) or No. 10 Carlow (9-35-1)

Date: Monday, May 16, 2021

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: Heindl Field (DuBois, Pa.)

After setting a program record of 26 wins in the regular and in the midst of a nine-game winning streak, the D’Youville softball program will enter next week’s USCAA Championships as the No. 2 seed in the 10-team field. The Saints will take on the winner of the second first-round game between No. 7 Penn St.-DuBois and No. 10 Carlow University. The Saints will be making their second consecutive appearance in the USCAAs after bowing out in the semifinals last season.

Mile-High Saints The 2022 edition of D’Youville softball has already proved to be one for the record books. Alongside setting the program record for single-season wins, the Saints have rewritten the program record book with new highs for single-season hits (64), runs scored (50), and stolen bases (24) set by senior Maddy Pepke, single-season extra-base hits by junior Hannah Bardeen (17), career triples by senior Mikaela Milleville (15), and another team record for stolen bases (79).

Four Named All-ECC – After winning the conference batting title for the second-consecutive season with her .481 average at the plate, Pepke was rewarded with the conference's highest honor when she was named East Coast Conference Player of the Year. Joining Pepke on the conference’s first team list was Bardeen, who finished fourth in the league in runs batted in (37) and fifth in batting average (.386) and home runs (6).

On the second team list were Milleville and sophomore pitcher Lauren Booth. Milleville turned in a .305 batting average during the regular season (4th on team) and drove in 27 runs (2nd on team). Booth reclaimed her stake as one of the conference’s toughest arms in the D’Youville circle. In 2022, she put up a .211 ERA in 76.1 innings pitched, good enough for the second-best earned run average in the ECC.

Last Time Out – The Saints wrapped up their regular season and East Coast Conference play with an impressive four-game sweep over Molloy on the final weekend of the regular season. The pair of twin-bill sweeps capped off a perfect 8-0 homestand at Dobson Field, where the Saints were a nearly unbeatable 14-1 in 2022.

DuBois Bound – The Saints will be heading to the USCAA Softball Championship for the second time in program history. D'Youville is in its second of three seasons as a member of the USCAA until the Saints are eligible for the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2024.

The Rest of the Field – Defending champions and number one overall seed Florida National are the only team ranked higher than D'Youville. In the newly expanded 10-team field, up from eight teams a year ago, the Saints and Conquistadors await the winners of the two first-round games. Florida National will play the winner of No. 8 Miami Hamilton and No. 9 Penn St.-Hazelton. D’Youville will take on the winner of No. 7 Penn. St.-DuBois and No. 10 Carlow.

The tournament is a double-elimination format that allows each team a shot at the National Championship by either winning each of their preliminary-round contests or by navigating their way through the loser’s bracket. The participant that makes the championship game from the loser’s bracket will have to defeat the participant from the winner’s bracket twice in order to be crowned USCAA National Champions.

Penn St.-DuBois at a Glance – The Saints and Nittany Lions are no strangers to each other, already squaring off in the season opener back on March 6 in Clermont, Fla. The Saints were victorious, 3-0, using a 15-strikeout gem in the circle from Booth. The tightly contested affair would prove to be an interesting match-up in the second round of the USCAAs as the Saints were also sent down on strikes 12 times in the pitcher's duel earlier this season.

DuBois (17-19 overall) was able to put their early-season struggles aside to compile a 12-6 record in conference play and closed out their regular season winning six out of their last eight.

Carlow at a Glance – The Celtics find themselves as the 10th seed in the USCAA Small College World Series after a 9-35-1 campaign. Carlow finished their regular-season winning only three of their final 10 games with their last victory against Alice Lloyd College on April 29.
