Flipping the script following their Feb. 26 loss to Medaille, the D'Youville men's volleyball team came out Tuesday night and swept the Mavericks in straight sets at the Sullivan Center in Buffalo, N.Y. Taking the match by scores of 25-23, 29-27 and 25-16, the Saints picked up their first win of 2021 and moved to 1-2 on the campaign, while Medaille shifted to an identical mark of 1-2 overall.

Freshman Joshua Roy powered D'Youville to victory using 13 kills and a .650 hitting percentage on the night, adding a solo block to earn himself National Offensive Player of the Night from OffTheBlock.com. Medaille's Malachi Jackson was right behind with 12 kills on his side, while Jackson's teammate Josh Shiflet Jr., paced all players with seven digs.

The first set had both teams trade points throughout, as a 5-1 run by the Saints put them out front, 11-6. That lead would hold, but not without a scare as Medaille put together four-straight points to cut the D'Youville edge to 24-23 before Roy buried his sixth kill of the night to finish off the opening frame.

Another back-and-forth frame in the second set saw the longest run go in favor of the Mavericks when a 3-0 push by the hosts made it 18-17 Medaille. The Saints fought back from down set point three times, eventually retaking the lead and winning the set off a 4-1 closing stretch.

D'Youville turned it up in the third set, starting off with a 9-2 surge that included a service ace from senior Ali Khadra. Medaille halted the run with four-straight points, but D'Youville countered by not allowing more than two points in a row to the Mavericks the rest of the night, keeping the advantage until a Medaille service error ended the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-0, in the Saints' favor.

Notables – Junior Anthony Dean led the match with 28 assists, with Medaille's Jake Siwy picking up 26 on the other side ... Roy also paced the Saints with five digs and two aces … Roy's solo block was the only block on the D'Youville side of the net on Tuesday, while Medaille only had one block as well.

Up Next – The Saints return to the court on March 18 when they host Hilbert at the College Center Gymnasium. Opening serve of that match is set for 7 p.m.
