BUFFALO, N.Y. - Led by a hat trick from senior Nick Dumond and goals from five different Saints, the D’Youville men’s soccer team kicked off their 2021 campaign in emphatic fashion, downing Bryant & Stratton – Rochester, 7-0, Friday evening at Dobson Field.

Three first-half goals, including the opener from Dumond, put the Saints in cruise control halfway through the non-conference match. After a barrage of shots from the D’Youville attack in the opening thirty minutes, Dumond finally found the back of the net, curling his shot into the top right corner, on an unassisted effort in the 32nd minute. Just four minutes later, freshman Paulo Carvalho doubled Saints’ advantage, opening his D’Youville scoring account with a shot into the lower right corner. Right before the intermission, Dumond slotted home his second goal of the game, this time from the penalty spot.

The floodgates opened in the second half as sophomore Noah Steele joined Dumond and Carvalho on the scoresheet. Steele tapped in the fifth goal of his D'Youville career off of a low cross from senior Jake Kowalewski. It took the Saints only six more minutes to find their fifth goal of the night, thanks to senior Robert McNeal's first goal in a D'Youville shirt, who scored a header from Kowalewski's corner kick. The pair of D'Youville goals widened their advantage to 5-0 just 12 minutes into the second 45 minutes. The Saints added two more goals in the 66th minute from freshman Luis Felipe Santos before Dumond netted his 16th collegiate goal to complete his hat trick in the 76th minute. Santos' first D'Youville goal came off of a deflection on the edge of the 18-yard box.

Freshman Ethan Picard got the nod in goal as he clocked over 60 minutes between the D’Youville pipes while making one save … Freshman Nico Susbilla went in goal for the final thirty minutes and also collected one save.

Five Saints found scored in the home-opening victory, paced by Dumond (3), Carvalho (1), Steele (1), McNeal (1), and Felipe Santos (1).

The Saints fired off 31 shots in the season opener, placing 16 on frame while holding the visitors to four shots and two on goal … D’Youville also held advantages in possession (56%) and corner kicks (14-1).

Head Coach Brendan Murphy’s Thoughts

On the team performance: "I was happy to see a lot of guys get involved in the attack and get on the scoreboard. There was some individual quality on [Bryant & Stratton] and I felt like we did a decent job containing their good players.”

On Dumond’s performance: "Dumond is a workhorse. For him, it starts with his attitude and the way he approaches every single training session. Those goals come from his work and his defense. He puts the work in and the results show up.”
