BUFFALO, N.Y. - The D’Youville men’s soccer team opened East Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon, falling to Daemen, 4-1, at Dobson Field. The Saints dropped to 4-2-1 and 0-1 in league play after losing their first match at home this season.
After a back-and-forth opening half-hour, Daemen (2-2 overall, 1-0 ECC) scored the game’s first goal when Christian Lewin found the back of the net on an assist from Vincent Ranieri in the 37th minute. D’Youville’s answer came just under three minutes later when senior Jake Kowalewski’s cross, recycled from an earlier free-kick, found senior Nick Dumond near the right post, whose right-footed shot beat the Wildcat goalkeeper to knot the game at one.
The teams went into halftime tied at one, but Anthony Cupello scored five minutes into the final period to put Daemen back ahead by one. Goals from Lewin (75’) and Trey Buscaglia (87’) concluded the scoring for the Wildcats.
Despite the three-goal setback, the Saints outshot Daemen 17-16, while both teams each had six shots on goal … Freshman Paulo Carvalho (2), Dumond (2), sophomore Guillermo Cabello (1), and freshman Luis Felipe Santos (1) each registered shots on target for D’Youville
Two Saints, Santos (48’) and freshman Rehn Pielechowski (87’) each found their names in the referee’s book with yellow cards while Buscaglia (79’) was booked with a yellow card for Daemen.
D’Youville returns to the pitch on Tuesday, September 21 for a road match at Pitt.-Johnstown. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 4 p.m. kick-off.
