Buffalo, NY - For the first time since the 2011 season, the D'Youville Men's Soccer Team has won back to back games after defeating conference opponent Penn St.-Altoona 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
Earlier this week, the Spartans defeated Hilbert 2-1 in 2OT to earn their first conference win of the season.
Junior Aaron Zelko (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) opened up the scoring for D'Youville in the first half of the game off of a feed from freshman Gerald West Jr (Buffalo, NY/Lockport). The goal was Zelko's first of the season and West's assist was also his first.
Early on into the second half, the Lions answered with a goal of their own to even the score at 1. Just under 15 minutes later, two veterans of the team stepped up once again. Junior Nick Johnson (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) fed sophomore Pat Mann (Brighton, NY/Brighton) for the game winning goal, just had the two done the game before.
Mann's goal was his second game winner in as many games and his second of the season. Johnson also assisted on Mann's game winning goal against Hilbert.
Junior goalie Brett Matthews (Angola, NY/Lake Shore) had a big performance for D'Youville stopping 8 of the 9 shots he faced, including a huge diving save in the first half. The Spartans freshman center backs Conner Ward (San Diego, CA/Cathedral Catholic) and Mike Lekanka II (Newfane, NY/Newfane) were once again solid, along with fellow freshman Nate Kummer (Deptford, NJ/Deptford).
As a team, the men had 8 shots on goal, scoring on 2 of them.
Home field advantage has become a true staple of this season's men's soccer team. D'Youville has scored 11 goals this season, all at home and 7 more than all of last season combined. All of the Spartan's 3 wins this season have come at home on their new turf. Last season the team went winless the entire season.
The new D'Youville Athletic Complex has been a secret weapon that the D'Youville soccer program has never had, and it is proving to be a true asset to the team.
The next game for the D'Youville Men's Soccer Team is Tuesday, October 14th at Pitt.-Bradford with the game beginning at 3pm.
