Men's Basketball Hangs Tough but Drops Home Opener to Roberts Wesleyan

In their first East Coast Conference matchup of the year, the D'Youville College men's basketball team battled hard for 40 minutes Wednesday evening but eventually fell short to Roberts Wesleyan, 86-71, at the College Center Gym in Buffalo, N.Y.

Despite trailing 11-0 to begin the game, the Saints outscored the Redhawks 39-33 for the remainder of the first half, which cut the early deficit to five points entering the locker rooms at 44-39. The Saints were able to cut into the early deficit in large part to their 50 percent shooting from beyond the arc (9-18 3PT). In the opening 20 minutes, D'Youville converted 48 percent of their attempts from the field (12-25 FG) and converted 7-of-9 attempts from the charity stripe. D'Youville cut the lead to two points with 36 seconds remaining on a layup from freshman guard Mason Putnam, his sixth and seventh points of the half.

In the second half, the Saints kept within striking distance of the Redhawks but could never get closer than two points after senior forward Grant Beyer hit a three at the 14:50 mark. After that bucket, a 10-2 run by Roberts Wesleyan, spanning just under four minutes, helped put them back up by 10 points.

Notables - Shooting on the evening was a tale of two halves for the Saints: after shooting 48 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point land in the first half, the Saints cooled down to 27.5 percent from the field and 23.8 percent from beyond the arc during the final 20 minutes... Four Saints landed in double figures in scoring: Beyer off the bench paced D'Youville (13 points, 4-10 FG), followed by sophomore forward Noah Denz (11 points, 4-9 FG), Putnam (10 points, 3-11 FG), and freshman guard Trent Scott off the bench (10 points, 4-12 FG)... Putnam added six of the team's 14 assists on the night compared to 11 from the Redhawks... Roberts Wesleyan edged D'Youville on the boards with 37 over Saints' 34... the up-and-down affair saw each team commit 19 turnovers.

Roberts Wesleyan landed all five of their starters in double-figure scoring... the Redhawks were led by forward Armon Nasseri (18 points, 6-8 FG), followed up by guard Shane Flanning (17 points, 6-8 FG), guard Amari Lee (16 points, 7-11 FG), guard Reggie Clark (13 points, 5-8 FG), and guard Isaiah Lewis (12 points, 4-7 FG)... Clark and Nasseri nearly posted double-double efforts, leading the Redhawks with nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
