In its first conference road game of the season, the D'Youville men's basketball team was defeated by Molloy, 101-80, in East Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon in Rockville Centre, N.Y. Reaching triple-digit scoring for the first time since December 2019, the Lions improved to 1-1 overall (1-1 ECC), while the Saints shifted to 1-2 (0-2 ECC) on the season.
With a game-high 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, Molloy's James Montgomery recorded his first double-double of the season, while freshman Trent Scott continued to make his mark for D'Youville by racking up 16 points. Steven Torre (20 points), Justin Caldwell (15 points) and Darren Fergus (13 points) all reached double figures for the Lions, while redshirt senior Grant Beyer and junior Garrian Wade did the same for the Saints with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Both teams traded baskets early, as Molloy opened the game with a pair of three-pointers on its first two shots before D'Youville answered with two makes of their own from beyond the arc. The Saints took their only lead of the game when Wade hit a jumper that made it 10-8, but Molloy used six team steals and 17 first-half points from Torre to enter the break with a 53-39 advantage. Torre and Montgomery (14 points) both ended up in double-digit scoring for the Lions at halftime, while nine Saints recorded buckets in the opening half.
The second frame saw a similar script, as D'Youville kept within striking distance for most of the half, but a late 19-7 run by Molloy put the Lions ahead by more than 20 points with under four minutes left. Montgomery continued his dominance down low, picking up 16 points in the second half, as the Saints could not find an answer for the Molloy forward. The Lions eventually closed out the win by hitting the century mark, the first D'Youville opponent to do so since Medaille's 101 points on Jan. 29, 2020.
