Men's Basketball Drops Weekend Finale at No. 7 Mercyhurst

The D'Youvlle men's basketball program wrapped up a four-game road swing Saturday afternoon at No. 7 Mercyhurst, dropping the fianle to the teams' weekend series, 99-31, at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center in Erie, Pa.

With the loss, the Saints fell to 1-5 overall, while the Lakers remained undefeated at 9-0.

The hosts jumped out to an early six-point lead before junior forward Jaeger Martino and senior forward Grant Beyer connected on back-to-back jumpers, putting D'Youville on the board. Later in the half, freshman guard Mason Putnam intercepted a Mercyhurst pass, leading to a fastbreak layup for Beyer. On the ensuing DYC possession, sophomore forward Noah Denz connected from downtown to pull the Saints back to within 10 points of the Laker advantage at 19-9. The two teams traded baskets for the next couple possessions, including a pair of layups from freshman forward Jared Sullivan and a floater from Beyer to make it a 27-15 game in favor of Mercyhurst. That's the last time the Saints found the bottom of the net for awhile as the Lakers put their foot on the gas pedal, using a 21-0 run over the next four minutes to stretch their advantage to 32 points at 47-15. Beyer collected a loose rebound a put it back for two points, ending the Mercyhurst run with 5:07 remaining in the half.

Notables – Sullivan paced the Saints in scoring (10 points, 4-4 FG), followed by Beyer (9 points, 4-14 FG) and Martino (4 points, 2-4 FG) ... a cold night from the field saw the Saints shoot a 25.0 percent (11-45 FG) clip ... the three ball was hard to come by in Saturday's setback as the Saints only managed to convert on one of their 19 attempts from beyond the arc.

Three Lakers posted double figure scoring efforts, led by guard Michael Bradley (12 points, 6-7 FG), forward Daniel Ogele (10 points, 3-4 FG), and guard Steve Cannaday (10 points, 4-5 FG) ... the Lakers had no trouble scoring Saturday, shooting 61.2 percent (41-67 FG) from the field, cashing in on 41.4 percent (12-29 3PT) of their attempts from downtown ... Mercyhurst controlled the glass for the second time this weekend, outrebounding the Saints 44-31.
