Fresh off of their best opening week since 2013, head coach Kyle McLain and the D’Youville baseball team will take on an early road test at Mercyhurst, heading down the I-90 on Sunday, March 21, for a doubleheader in Erie, Pa.
Last Time Out – D'Youville split two doubleheaders last week with Hilbert and Cazenovia in Gowanda, N.Y. In both matchups, the Saints dropped the opening matchup but rebounded in game two. Freshman pitcher Alex Dzimian (1-0) picked up his first career win in the March 9 victory over Hilbert. In five innings, the rookie right-hander picked up four strikeouts and only surrendered one earned run on two hits. Despite receiving a no-decision in Saturday’s triumph over Cazenovia, senior pitcher Bryce Little silenced the Cazenovia offense in five shutout innings. The Arcade, N.Y., native fanned seven batters, including the first five Wildcats he faced, and only allowed one hit.
Tale of the Tape – The two schools have no recent history since D’Youville is in its first season as a provisional Division II program. Last season, Mercyhurst jumped out to a 5-3 record last season before their season was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic while the Saints struggled out of the gates to a 1-6 mark.
D’Youville by the Numbers – Sophomore catcher Jeremy Glinski has led the D’Youville offense thus far, hitting safely in seven of his twelve at-bats (.583 average). Glinski’s stat line through four games this season includes three doubles, one triple, four runs scored, and one walk. Mateo Santos, another sophomore catcher, had a strong week as well, hitting safely in five of his 11 at-bats while driving in a team-high four RBI and collecting one triple and two walks. On the hill, strong starting pitching was the theme in last week’s pair of doubleheaders. Despite being handed two losses, senior pitcher Adam Lampman tossed two quality starts. In 12.2 innings, Lampman fanned a team-high 13 batters, surrendering only three walks and three earned runs (2.13 ERA) while giving up 10 hits.
Mercyhurst at a Glance – Ranked No. 3 in the NWCBA Atlantic Region Poll, the Lakers are off to another hot start this season with a 5-2 overall record. After dropping their season opener to Wheeling University, Mercyhurst went on a five-game winning streak that was snapped in their last game on Sunday, March 14, at Division I Akron. Through seven games, four Lakers are batting over .300. Infielder Matthew Gibson paces Mercyhurst with a .467 clip, followed by outfielder Tyler Zaluski (.360 average), utilityman Philip Ferranti (.360 average), and infielder Troy Banks (.333 average).
