The D'Youville baseball team will have its hands full this weekend when No. 20 St. Thomas Aquinas comes to town for a three-game series to wrap-up the 2021 regular season and East Coast Conference play.
Last Time Out - The Saints dropped all three games in their final road series of the year, falling to Staten Islan in a trio of close contests ... After seeing CSI complete the comeback in Friday's series opener, the Saints jumped out to a four-run advantage in Saturday's first game, starting off with sophomore Jeremy Glinski tripling to score fellow sophomore Jared Glowniak in the first inning before freshman Alex Dzimian plated Glinski with a single. Senior Renato Quinones then got in a fourth-inning rundown between first and second that allowed junior Alex Liem to sneak home from third base. D'Youville widened its cushion to 4-0 in the fifth when Dzimian ripped a double that brought in Glowniak. The Dolphins cut the Saints' lead in half during the home half of the sixth, as Peter Lombardo hit a two-run double, and back-to-back walks in the seventh evened the contest at 4-4, and a sacrifice fly from Sal Trancucci gave CSI a 5-4 lead. The Saints added one more in the top of the eighth inning before the Dolphins took control in the home half of the frame to take the final 8-5 advantage ... D'Youville struck first again in the final game of the series with a three-run fourth inning but two runs from the Dolphins in the bottom of the fourth, three in fifth, and two more in the sixth inning downed the Saints for the final time on the weekend.
Tale of the Tape - This weekend's regular season finale will be the first time the two conference foes will meet since the Saints joined the East Coast Conference last summer.
A Loaded Senior Day - The Saturday doubleheader will also serve as the Saints' Senior Day, as the team honors seven departing seniors: Matt Guenther, Quinones, Brendan Burke, Nick Jank, Adam Lampman, Bryce Little and Kevin Sanders.
D'Youville by the Numbers – Glinski's six hits at Staten Island raised his batting average to a team-best .333 through 24 games ... Glinski is followed up by Dzimian (.284 AVG) and Quinones (.226 AVG) ... Glinski had two stolen bases in the CSI series, inflating his conference-best total to 18 on the season ... Dzimian's 12 runs batted in sits atop the D'Youville RBI tally ... Lampman ranks fifth among ECC pitchers with 42 strikeouts this season.
STAC at a Glance – The first-place Spartans sit atop the East Coast Conference with a 14-3 league record. STAC is also ranked second in the NCBWA East Region and used three wins in four games last weekend to keep the No. 2 stop in this week's poll. The lone defeat came in a 15-14 thriller on Friday, April 30, at Queens. The Spartans returned home on Saturday and swept the Knights in a doubleheader, 12-0 and 5-4, before edging Mercy in a make-up game, 7-6, on Sunday, May 2 ... The Spartans are led at the plate by three hitters with averages over .400, paced by Sean Lynch (.439 AVG), Joseph Scamardella (.409 AVG), and Andrew Jemison (.402 AVG) ... James Versage is fourth on the squad with a .377 batting average but his 30 RBI are a team high, and his four home runs are good for second on STAC ... Alex Mack enters the series with the lowest ERA in the ECC at 1.07, and is tied for the league lead in wins with five victories ... James Reilly paces the ECC with four saves.
