Team Offensive Effort Earns Lacrosse Second Win

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's lacrosse team won their second game of the season on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Cazenovia Wildcats 17-14.

Cazenovia got on the board first in just 0:24 as they took a quick lead over D'Youville. The Spartans would answer right back as Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) scored her first career goal less than a minute later to tie the game at 1-1. Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) would then take over on offense, scoring the next three goals for the Spartans to give them a 4-2 advantage.

With just under 12 minutes to go in the first half, the Wildcats would tie the game at 5-5, but D'Youville would answer once again. Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) scored her second goal of the season to give the Spartans the lead back at 6-5, and Marissa Markott (Sanborn, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) tallied her first goal of the game to give D'Youville a 7-5 lead at halftime.

As the second half started, Cazenovia tied the game up at 7-7 with just over two minutes gone off the clock. The Spartans would then turn it up on offense, scoring three goals to lead 10-7. Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) played a key role in keeping the Spartans ahead as she scored three consecutive goals for the women, keeping them ahead by three at 12-9 with 16:19 to go in the game.

Despite a three goal deficit, the Wildcats were able to score four unanswered goals to take the lead at 13-12. Markott then scored three straight goals for D'Youville, sending the Spartans back up 15-13. Campbell added her fourth goal of the game with 2:42 remaining in the game to put the score out of reach for the Wildcats and the Spartans went on to win their second game of the season 17-14.

Seven different players scored for D'Youville in the game as they scored a season high 17 goals. Three players each had four goals in Campbell, Golding, and Markott. Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder) added two goals and two assists with Sierra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scoring a goal and recording a team high three assists. Lundrigan and Riforgiato each added goals, with Lundrigan tallying two assists.

On the defensive end, Callan Smith (Amherst, NY/Amherst) led the team with nine ground balls while Alison Gareis (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary) and Julia Prychodko (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) each had four ground balls. Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) earned her second win of the season with 10 saves.

The next game for the women will come this weekend on Saturday, March 31 as they travel to Wells to play the Express at 1:00pm.
