Cazenovia, NY – The D'Youville women's basketball team won their second straight game Sunday afternoon, defeating the host Cazenovia Wildcats by the final score of 69-66.
After over two minutes of play in the game, the Spartans got out to a 5-0 lead over the Wildcats. Back-to-back buckets from Kelsey Carpenter (Hilton, NY/Hilton) would help extend to D'Youville lead to 9-1 with Sydney Alton (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) then hitting a three, extending the team's lead to nine. Cazenovia would begin to get their offense going while D'Youville's began to struggle with the Wildcats outscoring the Spartans 10-5 in the final five minutes of the quarter, but the early lead from the Spartans allowed them to stay ahead 17-16 after 10 minutes of play.
Both teams struggled on offense to begin the second quarter, combining for 10 points through the first four minutes. Cazenovia remained right on the tail of the Spartans and their lead as they were within a basket at 26-24 after a made Wildcat layup. They then tied the game and took the lead over D'Youville at 28-26. Neither team would get more than a three-point lead over the other for the remainder of the quarter as they traded baskets and the lead.
Following a Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) made three to give the Spartans a 33-30 lead, Cazenovia would score the next five points before a Carpenter free throw at the end of the half put D'Youville back to within one at 35-34.
It remained a close game to begin the third with the Wildcats taking a five-point lead just over two minutes in. They then opened up a seven-point lead at 47-40 before the Spartans scored three consecutive baskets to make it a one-point game. As the quarter continued to roll on, D'Youville would gain momentum on offense and would take the lead at 53-52 with 1:50 to go in the quarter on a Hore made three. Cazenovia would regain the lead in the final minute before a Monica June (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) made three in the final seconds to give D'Youville a 56-55 lead after three quarters.
The Spartans didn't record their first points of the fourth until there was 6:40 left on the clock in the game, allowing Cazenovia to take a 60-56 lead before June converted an and-one to have the Spartans trail 60-59. Back-to-back layups from Carpenter and Darian Evans (Brant, NY/Lake Shore) would then put D'Youville ahead by three points with under four minutes remaining in the game, holding a 68-64 lead over the Wildcats with 1:01 in regulation. Cazenovia would score just two more points in the game as the Spartans were able to hold off the Wildcats, winning their third game of the season by the final score of 69-66.
Evans continued to have an extremely impressive senior season, scoring 16 points to go with a career high 18 rebounds in a team high 38 minutes of action. Hore followed with a team high 18 points, adding eight rebounds and six rebounds. Alton contributed 11 points and seven rebounds with June scoring 10 points. In her first start of the season, Carpenter scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds.
Off the bench, Sara Field (Durhamville, NY/VVS) led the team with five points while Kailey Kellner (Coupeville, WA/Coupeville) added a point and two boards. Hanna Wozniak (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Alexandria McBride (Elma, NY/Iroquois) each had a rebound.
The next game for the women comes this Wednesday in their conference opener as the Spartans host the rivaled Hilbert Hawks at 6:00pm in the College Center Gym.
