Buffalo, NY - Despite being the offseason, the 2017-18 D'Youville men's basketball team earned yet another academic award as they were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NABC Academic Excellence Team.
In order to make the NABC Academic Excellence Team, a team must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better for the 2017-18 season. The Spartans earned a 3.315 GPA for the 2017-18 academic year to qualify for the academic excellence team. They also were the recipient of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Team Peak Performer Award for having the highest team cumulative GPA amongst all men's basketball team's in the AMCC.
Four individual players were also honored by the NABC and make the NABC Honors Court. Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford), Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy), and Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) were all named to the honors court by maintaining a 3.2 GPA or higher for the 2017-18 academic year. Only juniors and seniors are eligable for the award.
In addition to his NABC Honors Court recognition, VanAuken was also named the D'Youville Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year this past spring. It was Will's second consecutive time earning the award.
This is the fifth consecutive season in which the men have made the NABC Academic Excellence Team. They have set the standard for academic excellence within the AMCC as they have also won the AMCC Team Peak Performer Award for men's basketball for each of the last two seasons and were the only team from the AMCC to be named to the excellence team this year.
As a whole, D'Youville athletics was awarded with the AMCC Institution Peak Performer Award for having the highest cumulative GPA amongst all of their student-athletes.
