Banquet Award Winners: D'Youville Men's Basketball

Depew, NY - Wednesday, May 2 marked a day of celebration and recognition for all of D'Youville's student-athletes at the yearly Athletics Awards Banquet at Salvatore's Italian Garden.

Head coach Earl Schunk and assistant coach Mike Haskell presented the awards to the D'Youville men's basketball team.

Junior forward Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) turned in his best career season this year and helped lead the Spartans on both ends of the court, earning the team's Most Valuable Player award. Juan finished the regular season second in the AMCC in FG% at 55.3%. He led the team in FG%, second with 1.0 BPG and 12.7 PPG, and third with 6.3 RPG.

Rosales recorded three double-doubles this season after starting 23 of 24 games. In 18 of those games he scored double-figures, including a stretch where he scored double-figures in 11-straight games. He scored a career high 24 twice, with one game that he scored 24, Rosales added 12 rebounds. In 17 games, Juan recorded a 50% or higher FG% and in eight of those games it was 70% or higher. In the second to last game of the season, Rosales had a game of 13 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists.

Captain and junior forward Will VanAuken (Calendona, NY/Calenonia-Mumford) was one of the most consistent players for D'Youville this season, anchoring their defense and doing whatever was asked of him, VanAuken awarded the team's Spartan Award. The Spartan Award represents a player who exemplifies teamwork, passion and a dedication to their team.

Will started 20 of 24 games and led the team with 31.2 MPG, ranking fourth on the team in rebounds with 6.1 RPG and recorded a career high conversion rate from three. He averaged the second highest PPG totals of his career but averaged career highs in RPG, APG, SPG, and MPG. VanAuken recorded one double-double during the season but was most importantly the key to the team's defensive strategy, able to guard all five positions effectively.

Coming on strong this season was Junior forward Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) who came into his own and became one of the go-go options for D'Youville. His efforts and improvements earned him the Most Improved Player award.

On the Spartans, Nwaekeke led the team with 7.0 RPG, was second with a 52.5 FG% and 2.1 APG, third with 1.0 SPG, and fourth with 10.2 PPG and 24.7 MPG. Brian began the season with back-to-back double-doubles and finished the season with a pair of double-doubles where he scored 26 points in each game. Against Pitt.-Bradford earlier in the year, Brian scored 23 points to go with 13 rebounds and five assists for one of his best all-around performances this season. In the AMCC he ranked fourth in RPG and sixth in FG%. Brian also led the team with six double-doubles this season.
