Hamburg, NY – The D'Youville men's basketball team fell to the Hilbert Hawks on Wednesday evening by the final score of 100-75.
Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) began the game with a three to open the scoring and give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Hilbert would then score seven unanswered and begin to get their offense going. D'Youville trailed by five at 13-8, but the Hawks would then go on a 13-0 run to take a double-digit lead.
Hilbert increased their lead to 25 on a three with 10:25 to go in the first. After a pair of Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) free throws, the deficit for D'Youville to 19 but the Hawks would go back up to their 25-point lead on another three with 4:21 left in the half. That lead would increase to 26 as Hilbert took a 56-30 lead into halftime.
The Hawks continued to pour it on in the second. Their lead increased to 31 and then 33 as the half went on and got as high as 37. However in the final nine minutes of the game, the Spartans outscored Hilbert 23-13. The Hawk's lead was just too large for the Spartans to come back from as they fell to Hilbert 100-75.
"Learning how to win against good teams requires us to be a lot more consistent and confident than we presently are, especially on defense," said head coach Earl Schunk. "I was impressed with our energy our younger guys showed in the second half along with Will VanAuken – who continues to be steady for us. There are lots of good signs but we need to be more focused for the entire 40 minutes. I have faith that these guys will figure it out."
Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) led the team with 15 points, adding seven rebounds and two assists. VanAuken recorded his second consecutive game of double-figure scoring with 13 points and a team high eight rebounds. Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) added 11 points while Nwakeke tallied 12.
Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) each had four points while Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) added six with a team high four assists. Steve Kunelius (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) both scored four points and Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) scored two.
The next game for the men comes this Saturday, February 10 as they host the Franciscan Barons at 1:00pm.
